This song has been in the works for over a year. I really wanted to do something interesting rhythm wise that stayed in 4/4. So I wrote this part that has all these leading tones, anticipation, and syncopation. I think we first jammed on the rhythm guitar part in the spring of 2011. I remember how nice and loose the verses felt, and the thrill of the double time choruses that Ian plays so hard on. I've had the main theme of the song in mind for even longer than that. Though the lyrics aren't overly poetic in a strict sense, it took me quite a while to decide how to articulate how I felt.
Once i had a draft of the melody, I recorded a demo in December of last year, and I uploaded that project file to Ian, and he, as he often does, engineered and recorded his own drums from his house in Hilton Head. I had Wayne drive some 30 minutes to my house to track the bass line in early January. I believe Mike wrote the lead guitar for the choruses last winter as well, and then he recorded them from Spartanburg. Jo recorded the flute when we finally got some proper flute mics in this fall. Then Mike game up with the cool counter point line on the classical guitar. The last few weeks, I had Rebekah help me with making the melodies for the verses much more interesting. Finally, I we got the takes we wanted on vocals, and Rebekah finished it up with her harmonies. I've spent the last few days mixing, and I'm glad I finally have some a new song for you all.
lyrics
When you became a man, did you put away childish things?
Is Truth in your toy bin waiting for moths or a thief?
Does the Word still echo in your mind like a thunderous stomp in an empty room?
Is your being, is all meaning still an issue for you?
It is for me!
I am still a child on a doorstep;
in a city with blinding lights far from the hilltop.
Do you ever just long for home—to run back to your mother's arms
Does your throat ache when you think of all you've loved that's lost?
Do you feel hopeless when you think of where you're going?
Is home somewhere you have never been?
It is for me!
I am still a child on a doorstep;
in a city with blinding lights far from the hilltop.
Can you hear me?
I'm still a child on a doorstep
in your city with blinding lights far from the hilltop.

of people with no place to go. In spite of recognizing the vanity of their hopes (being-for-other-that-is-being-for-self), they wander about feverishly writing music that never quite satisfies their desires....more
