My heart pounded through my chest.

I've been broken, shamed, and reborn
I'll be truthful with you dear,
The sea's calling and I know it's only fear
That's held me captive on dry land,
Please take my trembling hand

I was beaten and left to die
so all that's mine could be yours too.
I went hungry so you could dine.
I spoke for you, when you had no voice

I've been ship wrecked, stoned, and jailed
I'm a prisoner of my faith,
indebted to an emerging grace,
living for Damascus light
that called me to suffer, starve, and write.

Despite suffering, shame, and fear,
I hold onto futures,
that are absolute and never sure
—seen only as blinding light
shining through the cracks in the walls
of this prison which contains us all
who are becoming
something promised but never seen;
I'll die living for eternal dreams.
